One of the best ways to develop family connection is creating positive family memories. The activities need not be elaborate, in fact, sometimes the more simple the better - as simplicity reduces stress and allows for more time to experience togetherness. An impromptu outing to a local you-pick berry farm is a fun way to spend the morning. It’s easy, it’s outdoors, and you end up with buckets of healthy berries that you can enjoy eating together.
On a recent trip to Washington State I awoke on a Monday morning to my son suggesting a drive to blue berry farm. Everyone was on board so we drove to the community in which my kids were raised and spent a couple of hours picking berries, laughing, reminiscing, and enjoying a beautiful summer morning in the Pacific Northwest. My son, who worked on a friend’s family berry farm in high school, shared tricks of the trade. The littles loved learning how to pick berries, tasting a berry or two, running around outside, and watching butterflies flutter by.
When we got home we worked together cleaning and packaging the berries for the freezer. My daughter-in-law made a delicious blue berry crisp for dessert which was the perfect way to end a wonderful day connecting with family.
