Keep It Simple

One of the best ways to develop family connection is creating positive family memories. The activities need not be elaborate, in fact, sometimes the more simple the better - as simplicity reduces stress and allows for more time to experience togetherness. An impromptu outing to a local you-pick berry farm is a fun way to spend the morning. It’s easy, it’s outdoors, and you end up with buckets of healthy berries that you can enjoy eating together.

On a recent trip to Washington state I awoke on a Monday morning to my son suggesting a drive to blue berry farm. Everyone was on board so we drove to the community in which my kids were raised and spent a couple of hours picking berries, laughing, reminiscing, and enjoying a beautiful summer morning in the Pacific Northwest. My son, who worked on a friend’s family farm in high school, shared tricks of the trade. The kids loved learning how to pick berries, tasting a berry or two, running around outside, and watching the butterflies flutter by.

When we got home we worked together cleaning and packaging the berries for the freezer. My daughter-in-law made a delicious blue berry crisp for dessert which was the perfect way to end a wonderful day with family.
